Toenail fungus can easily spread to your other nails — as well as to other people. To keep toenail fungus under control, consider these proven prevention tips from an expert.

About one in 10 adults develop toenail fungus at some point. By age 70, your chances are more like 50/50. Not only is this infection bothersome, but it’s also highly contagious.

At Babak Kosari, DPM, in Northridge and Santa Clarita, California, board-certified foot and ankle surgeon Babak Kosari, DPM, FACFAS, provides effective toenail fungus treatment to bring you lasting relief. Here, he explains how to keep this common conundrum from spreading.

Toenail fungus 101

Toenail fungus is an infection that’s usually caused by a type of mold known as dermatophytes. Once it sets in, your symptoms may include:

  • Thick or misshapen toenails
  • Toenails that appear brown, yellow, or white
  • Toenail cracks or crumbling
  • Toenails that separate from your skin

While toenail fungus isn’t generally painful, you may be embarrassed by the altered look of the affected nails. Without treatment, you can experience more severe symptoms and permanent damage if the infection spreads.

Anyone can develop toenail fungus, but older age, a history of athlete’s foot, poor hygiene, toe injuries, and certain chronic foot-affecting conditions (i.e., diabetes) can increase your risk.

How to keep toenail fungus from spreading

Toenail fungus can easily spread from one nail to the next, as well as to other people. Essentially, any direct exposure to the fungal spores can lead to additional infection.

To guard against this, take these steps:

  • Apply an antifungal powder
  • Disinfect all tools, such as nail clippers and files
  • Get rid of (or clean) old shoes
  • Keep your toenails clean and dry
  • Keep your toenails trimmed, straight across
  • Wear absorbent socks and breathable shoes
  • Wear shoes in bathrooms, locker rooms, and near pools

If you get pedicures, make sure the salon you choose cleans their equipment well between sessions. Bringing your own pedicure tools can help prevent spreading the infection, too.

Lastly, seek expert support when needed — especially if you’re dealing with any lingering or recurrent toenail fungus symptoms. Then, stick to the provided treatment plan.

Medical treatment for toenail fungus

Toenail fungus can be difficult to treat, so working with a qualified expert is important. After an exam, Dr. Kosari and our team provide a customized treatment plan, which may include an oral or topical antifungal medication, or noninvasive laser treatment.

Depending on factors like your overall health and when you start treatment, it may take 12-18 months before a healthy nail fully replaces each damaged one. When you see a healthy nail emerging at the base, the fungal infection has cleared.
